Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich

Since his early years, the Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich was distinguished by wit and resourcefulness.

In his hands was concentrated enormous military power.  In the early 30's he bore the title: Adjutant General, Inspector General of the Engineering part, the Commander of the Separate Guards Corps, the Principal Chief Pag, all Land Cadet Corps and the Noble Regiment.

He voluntarily took upon himself the role of the Imperial Capital Guard: Mikhail Pavlovich was convinced that by pulling guard, he helped his older brother run the country.  He was utterly devoted to his brother, Nicholas I.

The main building of the State Russian Museum is the Mikhailovsky Palace, the splendid Neoclassical residence of the Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich erected in 1819-25 to a design by Carlo Rossi on the square of arts in Saint Petersburg.

Upon the death of the Grand Duke, the residence was named after his wife as the Palace of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, and became famous for its many theatrical presentations and balls.  It is the largest depository of Russian fine art in Saint Petersburg.
